ACO/ Penn Presents New Music Readings and Lab. The Orchestra Underground, under the baton of Cliff Colnot performed James' dissertation work, Proximate Spaces, a dialogue for piano and chamber orchestra.

James defended his dissertation, which consisted of two components: Proximate Spaces, a dialogue for piano and chamber orchestra and "Conflicting Lines, Cohesive Structures: Multiple-Directed Linearity in Witold Lutoslawski's Third Symphony." Ten days and a few revisions later, James officially become a doctor of philosophy in music, composition and theory.
